Author- Kim Harrison My Rating- 3 STARS Synopsis- All the creatures of the night gather in "the Hollows" of Cincinnati, to hide, to prowl, to party... and to feed. Vampires rule the darkness in a predator-eat-predator world rife with dangers beyond imagining - and it's Rachel Morgan's job to keep that world civilized. A bounty hunter and witch with serious sex appeal and an attitude, she'll bring 'em back alive, dead... or undead. |
After reading the good reviews and advice to push through the first couple of chapters, I kept picking it up and trying again. The story and plot is good, though I lost track sometimes with what was going on and new words used that weren't too clearly explained. Rachel, Ivy and Jenks make for a fun time and they are very well written. But, I didn't quite connect with anything until about 60% then enjoyed it until around 85% where I started slipping again.
However this is not a bad book, the plot is paced well and the humour shown through Rache's POV is refreshing and made me smile. It is a good start to the series. It didn't blow me away but the characters keep you coming back. Jenks is a hilarious little pixie, Ivy is a scary vamp with a heart of gold when she shows it and Rachel is brilliant. She is a good witch, not perfect, not strong and spends much of her time afraid. But Rachel is someone you can relate to. Yes she is a witch, but she is a small time white witch living in a big scary world of monsters and she has to use all her wits to get through the hard times. It is nice not to read about a protagonist that is already too good. She messes up and when she does, it is pretty funny.
When I finally got in to this book I really liked it and would like to see where the second book goes eventually. I wanted to love it. And I'm honestly not too sure why I didn't but with the ratings and reviews this series has, I want to stick with it.
Overall, it was enjoyable once you got in to the story
